OUR STORY
We met through mutual friends in 2003 and very quickly became inseparable. While driving together through San Francisco on September 4th, 2004, Aksel started the conversation that marked the start of our relationship by asking Shelley, "What would be different if we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend?" Thirteen years later, we went out to dinner to celebrate our anniversary a day early on September 3rd, 2017, since Aksel was traveling to visit his family in France on the 4th. That night, Aksel started the conversation that marked the start of our engagement by asking Shelley, "What should I tell my family when they ask me when we're getting married?"
We've shared so much with one another over the years between those two conversations. We have lived together with friends and with Shelley's family. We have worked together at two different knife-sales jobs: Cutco and We Be Knives. We attended school together at College of San Mateo and again at Santa Monica College after we moved to Los Angeles in 2009. We made the transition from community college students to university students together. Aksel studied animation at CalArts while Shelley studied mathematics at CSUN, and we both earned bachelor's degrees in 2014. Since then, Aksel has supported Shelley through grad school applications, a master’s degree, more grad school applications, and now her return to grad school. Shelley has supported Aksel through several years of balancing internships, freelance work, and contract animation gigs. We have cared for one another through illness and injury. We have stood beside one another through times of loss and deep sorrow. Together, we have made some of our most important friendships. We have driven hundreds of thousands of miles, watched the sun rise from the top of a volcano, and learned how to breathe underwater together. Somewhere along the way, we lost track of time and celebrated our tenth anniversary one year early, so we got to celebrate it twice!
Now, after over 14 years, we are taking the next step in our lives together. We are so happy to share this exciting time with so many of our loved ones, and with any luck, we'll get to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary twice, too.
